Austin Sachenbacher

By: Nora Wixted-Hogue

We were ready! Blue Lew, Jim Remsburg, Ted Cobena and I were all set to go with Butch Blasingame on electric guitar. We started out sweet but got hard and heavy real soon! Scott Noble and Austin Sachenbacher joined in on guitars and we rocked out for the first set! We were missing some of our “bird-buds”  but I knew that they had got that thing that’s been going around (I got it, too – that’s why I haven’t blurbed until today!) but most of them sent love and promises to be here next week. But, I gotta tell you, the folks that were there were having fun!

Rebecca Akers and SecondNature

Jim and Ted had a Valentine’s Day gig with Scott Tansey and Rebecca Hope Akers, two of my favorite Jammers, so they were the next in line to play. Y’all know how much I love Ted and Jim, and how I feel about how talented Rebecca is, but when they get Scott into the mix, it’s just beautiful!!! They played lots of classic love songs and jazzy stuff, too. So very sweet and gooey! My Valentine’s Day Gift was getting to listen to them! All That we needed was chocolate! (Have you ever had a chocolate martini? ohhhh…)

Vicky Michaels

My next extra sweet surprise was my very good friend, Sabrina McKinney! She is such a fine vocalist and acoustic guitarist! And I got the best news!!! She has re-joined with “New Fangled Theory”!!! LIMBO BE DAMNED!!! They are back up and running again!!! This group has won numerous Beachcomber Music Awards in the past two years and we’ve missed them since they went on hiatus – BUT THEY ARE BACK!!! Keep your ears open for them – hear them as soon as you can!!! And often! ‘nuf said… now if that wasn’t enough, Sabrina introduced me to her niece, Vicky Michaels, new here from St. Louis, and let me tell you, the lady can sing!!! She and Sabrina have that “family blending kind-a vocal sound” that just tickles your ears! And either one can pull off lead or back-up like nobody’s buisiness!!! I was tempted to sit in but why screw up perfection??? You WILL be hearing more from both of them!!!

The last set was full of everyone! John Hodge played some guitar, Vicky sang lead. Sabrina sang, too, Chuck Formes got on the drums and we all just revelled on eachother!!! So LUCKY to be part of all this MUSIC!!! It was all too fine! I want to thank everyone who was part of our night!!! Y’all put the heart in my Valentine!

I’m hoping that we’re all over whatever that was that knocked us in the ? last week…I’m feeling much better and hope my Birds are better, too! We need you to FLY, don’t you know! And thank you for sending the messages that you couldn’t be there…I love you, too…

Sunday should be spectacular!!! The “Blackwater” Guys say they’ll be there (see “News Flash”) and I’m always up for surprises!!! There’s no telling until we get there! Hope to see you, too!!!

NEWS FLASH 1: Jim Remsburg and Scott Tansay are playing every Tuesday from 5 ’til 7pm…LOVE THAT!!!

NEWS FLASH 2: “Blackwater” will be playing Tuesday, March 8th, for Cabana’s Mardi Gras Party!!! (“T’row me somet’in’ mister!!!) (how bout dat?) Got Beads??? Bet Chris (how ’bout it)’ll fix you up!!!

NEWS FLASH 3: The Beachcomber Music Awards will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 8pm, at the L.A.Lounge!!! Blue Lew, Ted and I are all nominated and since I’m sure that you voted …! Please come to the ceremony and you’ll hear some of the best music on the face of the planet!!! We are truly blessed to have so much musical talent in such a small space of the Emerald Coast!!! A musician needs an ear, just as a painter needs and eye, just as a heart needs a soul…we need all of you…as you appreciate us, we appreciate you…let’s face it…if nobody listened, no one would play…if nobody played, there would be no music…no music…no lullabyes, no Christmas Carols, no dancing…good grief!…the Irish learned how to dance without letting their heads move up and down at the bar so the bad guys wouldn’t arrest them for illegal dancing!!!!!!!!(My mom told me that…just watch a group of pro Irish dancers…).A world without music is a world without life. Birds sing, cats purr, dogs bark, snakes hiss, bears growl, coyotes howl, whales sing…my tone deaf brother sings!!! Very scary day in church…If you are a music lover, come and join us as we honor our best!!!

The $3 cover charge goes to charities the Beachcomber has been supporting for many years. We . as musicians, support them, too. Show your support! See you There!

When we got to the Cabana Saturday Evening, there were already lots of people there listening to the last of “Destin Harmony”. It was the first time I had heard them and really enjoyed it! Then it was a scramble to get the stage switched up and ready for the Jam. Our friends and lots of musicians started streaming in and the place was totally packed before we struck the first note!

Andy Durand

Blue Lew, Jim Remsburg, Ted Cobena and I started off the night rockin’ away and were soon joined by Scott Noble and Austin Sachecnbacher on electric guitars. We got the crowd jumpin’ and before the end of the first set, WE FOUND ANDY DURAND!!! He’s been missing for so long! It was such a pleasure to have him get up with us! He played “Blondie” – my hollow-body electric that Lew uses all the time – and sounded GREAT!!! He said his voice was a little worn out but I couldn’t tell…sounded like Andy at his best to me!!! We had a ball backing him up! Hope to see him alot more often!

Scott Tansey

The next set (no break – just musical chairs), Scott Tansey led the band for a few – he’s so good! He and Jim are going to be playing a duo on Tuesday evenings starting next week so be sure to check them out!!! – We get to do lots of 3-part harmonies with him – LOVE that! – with the audience singing, too! And then, it took about 3 minutes to get the “Jersey Seals” up and running. Aaron, Joey and William were there but Kevin couldn’t make it (- something about having to paint a chair???) so I got to play piano for them on a couple of tunes. I just love those guys! They have such a wide range of covers and their originals get better every time they write a new one! Folks were up and dancing and having BIG FUN!!!

Taylor Laird

Then we got Blue Lew back up and jammed some more. Blackwater’s Chris (HOW ‘BOUT IT!) Clarke got down on bass and sang a song or two before Taylor Laird took over Lew’s spot and we got to back him up! Another bunch of 3-part harmonies! It was a blast! He is one talented young man – kinda handsome, too! Always great to have him play! And then, he played the keys when Lew got back up and I got to listen! Almost as much fun as jammin’…

It was time to get the “Seals” back up for a couple more before they had to leave and they were ON!!! The crowd wouldn’t let them quit so there were some encores happening before they said they HAD to go! Most of the guys are still in  School so we can’t keep them out too late – but we keep them as long as we can!!! They are so cool!

Chuck Formes

The last set (again, no break) was a little bit of everyone! Chuck Formes played a few on drums, Chris and Jim swapping in and out on bass, everybody singing and the place was all caught up in the excitement! So many wonderful fans and musicians, new and old friends, NOBODY was sittinig down if they could find a place to dance! It was one hell of a good time! We were SMOKIN’ HOT!!! and totally wore out by the end of the night! It was just way too much fun! Lew got lots of video and others took lots of pictures to prove it! Yeah!

Since the Sunday Jam was on Saturday, we were lucky enough to get to see Melissa behind the bar with Wade  and we sure kept them busy! The waiters were all over the place and if they couldn’t get around the dancers, well, they just danced with them on their way! Too funny! The Kitchen crew were slammed, too! hey are the best buch of people at the Cabana! Thanks to them all!

The Super Bowl was fun to watch – I was rooting for the Steelers but very happy for Green Bay (sans F…)  (It was actually nice to watch this year since I wasn’t knuckle-chewing like last year with the Saints!) Can’t wait for next year, though. GEAUX SAINTS!!!

That’s about all for now. We’ll be back at Cabana for the Sunday Jam on SUNDAY at 7pm. Sure hope it’s as much fun as this week was! Lots of promises for return performances! And go to the Cabana’s website to find out about the Valentine’s Day Special Act 4 Murder Mystery Dinner. Sounds like alot of fun and great food!

Deep Pellum Blues “Live” by Blue Lew’s GrooveShare

Blue Lew Hogue on Guitar and Vocals

Blue Lew grew up in a small town south of Nashville where he learned to sing in Church and won awards in his High School choir, as he Learned to pick his Silver Tone guitar on his front porch.

His Southern Rock and Tennessee Blues influences are evident in everything he plays, from John Lee Hooker and Muddy Waters to Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughn. As a young man, he traveled the Southeast with several different bands and at the same time worked in many different “Manufacturing Companies” but finally decided to return to his first love – his own original music. A prolific songwriter, he and his wife Nora have collaborated on some of the bands most requested numbers.

“He loves what he does and it shows in every performance!”

Nora Wixted-Hogue on Keys and Vocals

Originally from New York, Nora calls New Orleans home after spending more than 20 years there.

Considered a veteran of the NO Music Scene, she played with some of the city’s finest musicians, put out a Solo album for Rabadash Records (which ultimately led to extensive tours in Europe, Japan, the Carribean and the States), and has had several of her original songs recorded by other NO Artists. Her keyboards reflect the “Bourbon Street Blues” and lay a strong foundation for the rest of the band to dance around. Kind of the file for the gumbo.

She was born…She started singing…She still does!”

Ted Cobena on Drums

Ted (“Animal”) Cobena hails from Lafayette, Louisiana, and has brought the “Swamp Funk” with him! He’s a strong, solid drummer with such a well-tuned-in ear that he can shake your dancin’ butt all over town, make you want to take your clothes off to a “Bourbon Street Strip Beat”, and then lay down the pulse of your heartbeat for a love song.

He and Nora have known one another since being fans of eachother’s bands back in the 80′s!

Winner of “The Beachcomber’s 1st Annual Music Awards Best Drummer”.

“He is the ultimate in rhythm and pushes the Groove to be all that they can musically be.”
